Using Reverse Dieting to Create a Potent, Fat- Burning Metabolism. Reverse dieting is the single greatest way to restore your metabolism to its fullest potential. Below you will find everything you need for incorporating reverse dieting into your nutrition program so that you can prime your metabolism for long- term fat loss. Why Should You Be Reverse Dieting? ![]() Tell me if this sounds like you: You’ve been trying to lose weight for a while now, and the weight loss starts off going really well. Eventually though, it slows down or stops altogether. So you decide to cut your calories further or do more cardio, and while that works for a little while, your progress plateaus yet again. This cycle is repeated until you are likely eating an absurdly low amount of calories and doing quite a bit of cardio. You probably feel worn down, hungry, achy, and have little energy in the gym. Both your workout progress and weight loss have stalled. The thought of cutting calories even further sounds like a nightmare. But you still have quite a bit of weight to lose. None of this makes sense to you because eating less and exercising more is supposed to result in weight loss. So then, why is all this hard work not getting you results? At the end of the article I’m going to give you a checklist to help you implement reverse dieting for your own situation. Keep an eye out for that. ![]() Macronutrient Balance: Do’s and Don’ts. A final point to touch on about IIFYM is that it doesn’t address macronutrient balance throughout each meal. Lose Fat Everything You Need to Know About IIFYM Three experts showed us the benefits of flexible dieting. Although it sounds very simple, there's more to reverse dieting than just "eat more, do less." If you want to maximize gains in metabolic rate without storing a ton. ![]() The Case for Reverse Dieting. The reason for your stalled progress is quite simple, actually. When you cut calories, however small your deficit might be, your metabolism begins to down- regulate. In an effort to conserve its energy for survival, your body begins to manufacture less metabolism- friendly hormones like thyroid, testosterone, and leptin so that your body can reach homeostasis. For a simple picture of how this happens, take a 5. This is supposed to result in about a pound of weight loss per week. But that is not going to happen forever, or you would obviously wilt to nothing. Along the way in the weight loss process your body begins to slow down its metabolism to conserve valuable energy (fat, glycogen). Eat at that original 5. ![]() ![]() Reverse dieting helps you restore your metabolism to a much higher level so that you have a better “base” to cut calories from. Starting your weight loss at 2. The former will result in slower, yet more sustained weight loss over time. The latter will likely result in fast weight loss, quickly followed by stagnation, frustration, and then a falling into the yo- yo dieting trap. How to Reverse Diet. The idea is simple and the name explains it all. What you do is slowly start adding calories back into your diet. I would recommend adding in about 5% more calories on a weekly basis. This equates to about 5. Many people immediately cringe at the thought of adding calories into their weight loss diet. They are flat out afraid of putting on weight. These people are usually the ones who are already eating very low calories, and the concept of reverse dieting (eating more to lose more) just doesn’t “click” with them. But let me tell you what you can expect, and this comes from my own personal experience as well as seeing hundreds of other people implement reverse dieting into their own nutrition. You immediately notice a boost in energy. Your motivation returns and you start looking forward to your workouts again. Your hunger decreases, and all the feelings of extreme restriction start to moderate. Your weight, surprisingly, starts to slowly decrease again – completely flying in the face of all logic. You feel warmer as you stoke your metabolic flame, and your sleep quality greatly improves. You seem to handle stress better, your mental well- being is improved, and life in general just seems a little easier to handle. Sounds pretty great, huh? The problem is that most people don’t have the patience or the courage to give reverse dieting a try. They fear weight gain and they want their results to keep moving forward. Adding calories into their diet seems to go against their goals. However, time and time again I have seen people add calories back into their diet only to see their weight loss pick right back up again. ![]() It’s one of the most exciting moments in a dieter’s life when he eats more and sees the scale tick downward. You too could share in this excitement. More Thoughts on Reverse Dieting. You likely have many questions about implementing reverse dieting, and I’ll be more than happy to answer your questions in the comment section, but before I end this article, I want to touch on a few of the intricacies of reverse dieting. ![]() Tweet; This post came about as a result of people asking me almost on a daily basis how to calculate their macros for a successful diet or cut. I found myself either. Hi JC, This is a great article! I’ve been struggling to figure out how many calories I should eat a day to lose 1 to 1.5 pounds a week through diet. Reverse dieting is a slow and methodical process. You must be patient, and you must understand that weight and fat are not always one- in- the- same. Extra calories can result in modest weight gain, but you are not going to gain fat eating under your maintenance calories. Instead, this added weight gain, if any, will be intracellular water retention – otherwise known as muscle glycogen. This is good weight. It is fuel for your muscles. It will boost your energy in the gym and help increase your strength, and it will make your muscles feel fuller. If there is an increase in weight, it usually happens the first couple of days after increasing your calories and then levels off and starts decreasing again towards the end of the week. Weigh yourself, but pay closer attention to the way you look and feel. I recommend you continue with the reverse dieting process for as long as you can handle it. Continue adding in calories (5% per week) until you notice a true weight gain over two weeks. When you finally get to that point, you will have found your true maintenance calories. You will be shocked at just how high you can go. From there, you can cut your calories by 1. One that will provide you with a great high base to cut calories from so that you can achieve sustainable long- term weight loss. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? Why not give reverse dieting a try? You really have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Still not sure? Why not take it one step at a time and just try adding in 1. I think you’ll be surprised with the results! If you’re ready to give it a try I’ve created a 4- step checklist to ensure you’re getting started right. It will walk you through the entire reverse dieting process and will let you know when and how much you should increase your calories in order to optimize your metabolism. You can download that checklist right here.

The few small studies that have looked at coconut oil for weight loss suggest that coconut oil may help reduce waist size, but it doesn't lead to significant weight loss or improved body mass index (BMI). Coconut oil is a tropical oil that's made from the dried fruit (nut) of the coconut palm tree. ![]() Proponents say that it contains a healthy type of saturated fatty acid (lauric acid) that your body quickly burns for energy. The oil extracted from fresh coconut contains a relatively large amount of medium- chain fatty acids, which don't appear to be stored in adipose tissue as readily as do long- chain fatty acids. This in part is why some people started looking at coconut oil as a weight- loss aid. However, coconut oil is still high in calories and saturated fat. Coconut oil has more saturated fat than lard does. Short- term studies have suggested medium- chain fatty acids, such as lauric acid, do not raise serum low- density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol as much as do long- chain fatty acids. However, there are few long- term studies looking at the relationship between coconut oil and heart health. In addition, 1 tablespoon contains 1. Consuming too much will give you extra calories — and that can signal to your body that it's time to store more fat. Even if the stored fat doesn't come directly from the coconut oil, high doses of coconut oil could still indirectly contribute to the very problem you are trying to address. Although eating coconut oil in moderation isn't going to result in great harm to your health, it's not likely to help you lose weight either. L- carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative that’s often taken as a weight loss supplement. It plays a crucial role in the production of energy by transporting fatty acids into your cells’ mitochondria (1, 2, 3). The mitochondria act as engines within your cells, burning these fats to create usable energy. Your body can actually produce L- carnitine out of the amino acids lysine and methionine. For your body to produce it in sufficient amounts, you also need plenty of vitamin C (4). ![]() ![]() In addition to the L- carnitine produced in your body, you can also obtain small amounts from the diet by eating animal products like meat or fish (5). Vegans or people with certain genetic issues may be unable to produce or obtain enough. This means that it’s a “conditionally essential” nutrient (6). Summary: L- carnitine is an amino acid derivative that can be produced in the body or obtained by eating animal flesh. It is also available as a supplement. ![]() Different types of carnitine. L- carnitine is the standard biologically active form of carnitine, which is found in your body, in foods and in most supplements. Here are several other types of carnitine: D- Carnitine: This inactive form may cause a carnitine deficiency in the human body by inhibiting the absorption of other, more useful forms (7, 8). ![]() L-carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative that’s often taken as a weight loss supplement. You’ve tried all the diet fads and you’ve even started. Carnitine is a substance that helps the body turn fat into energy. Your body makes it in the liver and kidneys and stores it in the skeletal muscles, heart, brain. Acetyl- L- Carnitine: Often called ALCAR, this is possibly the most effective form for the brain. It may also be used to treat neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. Propionyl- L- Carnitine: This form is well- suited for blood- flow- related issues such as peripheral vascular disease and high blood pressure. It may work via the production of nitric oxide, which improves blood flow (9, 1. L- Carnitine L- Tartrate: This is one of the most common forms found in sports supplements, due to its rapid absorption rate. It may help with exercise- related factors such as muscle soreness and recovery (1. For most people, acetyl- L- carnitine and L- carnitine seem to be the most effective for general use. However, you should always pick the form that’s best for your personal needs and goals. Summary: Although L- carnitine is the standard form, you can also take acetyl- L- carnitine, propionyl- L- carnitine and L- carnitine L- tartrate. L- carnitine’s role in the body. L- carnitine’s main role in the body has to do with mitochondrial function and energy production (3, 1. In cells, it helps transport fatty acids into the mitochondria, where they can be burned for energy. About 9. 8% of the body’s L- carnitine stores are found in your muscles, along with trace amounts in the liver and blood (1. For general health, it benefits your mitochondrial function and may help increase mitochondrial growth and health, which plays a key role in disease and healthy aging (1. Newer research has shown the potential benefits of different forms of carnitine, which may be used for conditions including heart and brain diseases (2. Summary: L- carnitine’s primary role is to transport fatty acids into your cells to be processed or “burned” by your mitochondria for energy. L- carnitine and weight loss. In theory, using L- carnitine as a weight loss supplement makes sense. Since L- carnitine helps move more fatty acids into your cells to be burned for energy, you might think this would increase your ability to burn fat and lose weight. However, the human body is extremely complex, and the results of both human and animal studies are mixed (2. In one study, 3. 8 women were split into two groups. One group took an L- carnitine supplement, while the other did not. Both performed four exercise sessions per week for eight weeks. The researchers found no difference in weight loss between the two groups, although five participants taking L- carnitine did experience nausea or diarrhea (2. Another human study monitored L- carnitine’s effect on the amount of fat that participants burned during a 9. The researchers found that four weeks of taking supplements did not increase the amount of fat that participants burned (2. However, one analysis of nine studies found that participants lost an average of 2. L- carnitine. Most of these studies were on obese individuals or the elderly (2. More research is needed to confirm the benefits of L- carnitine in a younger, more active population. It may aid in weight loss for obese individuals or the elderly, although a solid diet and exercise regimen must be in place first. Summary: Although the cellular mechanism of L- carnitine makes it seem like it could benefit weight loss, the effects are small and research is mixed. Effects on brain function. L- carnitine may have benefits for brain function. Some animal studies suggest the acetyl form, acetyl- L- carnitine (ALCAR), can help prevent age- related mental decline and improve markers of learning (3. In human studies, taking acetyl- L- carnitine daily helped reverse the decline in brain function associated with Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases (3. It was also found to have similar benefits for general brain function in elderly individuals who did not have Alzheimer’s or other brain conditions (3. In specific cases, it may even help protect your brain from cell damage. In one study, alcoholics took 2 grams of acetyl- L- carnitine per day for 9. Afterward, they showed significant improvements in all measures of brain function (3. More research is still required to investigate the long- term benefits in healthy individuals who are free from disease or problems with brain function. Summary: L- carnitine, specifically acetyl- L- carnitine, can have beneficial effects on brain function and other related diseases. Other health benefits. Here are a few more health benefits that have been linked to L- carnitine supplementation. Heart health. Some studies have demonstrated a potential benefit for reducing blood pressure and the inflammatory process associated with heart disease (2. In one study, participants took 2 grams of acetyl- L- carnitine per day. It reduced their systolic blood pressure, an important indicator of heart health and disease risk, by almost 1. L- carnitine has also been shown to cause improvements in patients with severe heart disorders, such as coronary heart disease and chronic heart failure (4. One 1. 2- month study found a reduction in heart failure and deaths among participants who took L- carnitine supplements (4. Exercise performance. The evidence is mixed when it comes to L- carnitine’s effects on sports performance. However, several studies have shown some mild benefits when participants have taken L- carnitine supplements in larger doses, or for longer periods (4. L- carnitine’s benefits may be indirect and take weeks or months to show. This differs from supplements like caffeine or creatine, which can directly enhance sports performance. L- carnitine may benefit: Recovery: It may improve exercise recovery (4. Muscle oxygen supply: It may increase oxygen supply to the muscles (4. Stamina: It may increase blood flow and nitric oxide production, helping delay the “burn” and reduce fatigue (4. Muscle soreness: It may reduce muscle soreness after exercise (4. Red blood cell production: It may increase the production of red blood cells, which transport oxygen throughout your body and muscles (5. Type 2 diabetes and insulin sensitivity. L- carnitine has also been shown to reduce symptoms of type 2 diabetes and its associated risk factors (5. In one human study of patients with type 2 diabetes, L- carnitine improved the blood sugar response to a high- carb meal. This blood sugar response is an important indicator of diabetes risk and overall health (5. It may also combat diabetes by increasing a key enzyme called AMPK, which improves the body’s ability to use carbs (5. Summary: Research shows L- carnitine may have benefits for exercise performance and help treat health conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Safety and side effects. Like most natural supplements, L- carnitine seems to be fairly safe and free of serious side effects when used sensibly and as directed. One study examined L- carnitine’s safety by giving participants 3 grams every day for 2. A comprehensive blood panel was conducted for each participant at the beginning and end of the study, and no negative effects were seen (5. In one review of L- carnitine’s safety, doses of approximately 2 grams per day appeared to be safe for long- term use. However, there were some mild side effects, including nausea and stomach discomfort (2. For most people, a dose of 2 grams or less per day seems to be relatively safe and free from serious side effects. Summary: Doses of 2 grams or less per day seem to be well tolerated and safe for most people. Some people have reported nausea or other digestive side effects, but no serious issues have been found. Top food sources of L- carnitine. You can get small amounts of L- carnitine from your diet by eating meat and fish (4, 5). The best sources of L- carnitine are: Beef: 8. Pork: 2. 4 mg per 3 oz (8. Fish: 5 mg per 3 oz (8. Chicken: 3 mg per 3 oz (8. Milk: 8 mg per 8 oz (2. Interestingly, food sources of L- carnitine actually have a greater absorption rate than supplements. According to one study, 5. L- carnitine is absorbed when it’s consumed from food, compared to only 1. As noted before, your body also has the ability to produce it naturally from the amino acids methionine and lysine if your stores are low. For these reasons, taking L- carnitine supplements would only be required in special cases — for example, if you’re using it to treat a disease or health condition. Summary: The main dietary sources of L- carnitine are meat, fish and some other animal products such as milk. A healthy individual can also produce sufficient amounts within the body. Should you take it as a supplement? Your L- carnitine levels are influenced by how much you’re eating and how much your body is producing.
